Condition guide · CDC source

Fibromyalgia is real, complex, and not explained by one universal cause.

Fibromyalgia can involve widespread pain, fatigue, sleep problems, and difficulty with thinking or concentration. Symptoms and needs differ between people.

Pain is only one part of the symptom pattern.

CDC lists widespread pain or stiffness, fatigue, sleep problems, and problems with thinking, memory, or concentration among common features. Mood symptoms can also occur.

These experiences overlap with other conditions. A clinician may use history, examination, and selected tests to evaluate the pattern and other possible explanations.

Management is individualized and may involve more than one type of support.

CDC describes self-management, physical activity, sleep habits, therapies, and medicines as possible parts of care. An individual plan depends on a qualified clinician’s assessment and the person’s health context.
